The Great Goddess of Knowledge
The same ritual is celebrated each year in India at the turn of the month of February. Vasant Panchemi is a Hindu holiday celebrated in honour of the Goddess of Knowledge.
This is the day when, according to legend, children learn to utter their first words. Supreme figure of Knowledge, the Saraswati goddess is venerated by students, professors and more largely by all those who have a debt towards the goddess. She exerts such a fascination that her faithful followers come to deposit in her sanctuary, pens, paper and perhaps, in the near future, microcomputers... It is indeed a question of offering a symbol of Knowledge in an effort to inspire the protection of Saraswati during the remainder of the year.
Her various attributes are as many symbols which raise Knowledge to its highest rank. The white color of the lotus on which she sits incarnates the purity of Knowledge. The rosary which she holds symbolises concentration, meditation and contemplation. Saraswati is represented with four arms whose hands denote the different aspects of her personality. Her upper right hand symbolises spirit, while the lower right represents the ego. Wisdom is represented by her upper left hand, while her remaining hand represents conscienceness.
